Aphorisms

"It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others."
— John Kirinrich

For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.

A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you don't have a leg to stand on.

"A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul."
— George Bernard Shaw

"If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything."
— Mark Twain

"A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes."
— Mark Twain

"Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it."
— Joseph Goebbels

"If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man."
— Mark Twain

"If one would give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest man, I would find something in them to have him hanged."
— Cardinal Richelieu

"The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."
— Mahatma Gandhi

"The offender never pardons."
— George Herbert

"Keep your friends close, and your enemies even closer."
— Sun-tzu

"Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?"
— Abraham Lincoln

"We are all full of weakness and errors; let us mutually pardon each other our follies."
— Voltaire

"If we practice and eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, soon the whole world will be blind and toothless."
— Mahatma Gandhi

"Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned."
— Buddha

"You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger."
— Buddha

Landslides

The picture above is of a cliff near Prawle Point, taken on 26th March 2008.  The bare patches of earth show where there have been landslides.  These are caused when there has been prolonged heavy rainfall.  The surface soil becomes waterlogged and heavy.  Also, the water acts a lubricant, making the ideal conditions for a landslide.  A good write-up on landslides is available on Wikipedia.

This is not a landslide:

This is not a landslide

This picture was taken 9th July 2007.  The rainfall had not been excessive - an average of 3.2 inches per month over the previous 3 months (April - June) according to the Slapton Ley Centre's weather station.

Note the following:

  • The surface vegetation is still intact - a landslide would taken it with the earth.
  • The shape of the pile - it could only been have caused by earth being poured from above.
  • The vegetation pulled down into the pile during the pouring process.

A Caravan

This picture was taken 13th June 2004.  The caravan has been clad in wood and a wood-burning stove has been added.  It was sold with a sitting tennant in 1995 along with the house.  It received no special mention in the sale documents, so all fixtures and fittings are the property of the new landlord.

Here are some pictures of the damage done by the tennant after he left:
